A water tank is a storage system that keeps water in a fixed structure, safely and hygienically, until it is needed. It is used for many different needs, from potable and utility water to fire water, and from irrigation water to process water. In this article we explain the criteria by which water tanks are classified and how to make the right choice.
Water Tanks by Area of Use
Water tanks are grouped into three main categories according to who uses them and for what purpose:
- Industrial water tanks: High-capacity solutions for factories, production facilities, power plants and fire suppression systems.
- Domestic water tanks: For hygienic and uninterrupted utility water in buildings such as residences, apartment blocks, housing complexes and hotels.
- Agricultural water tanks: For irrigation and rainwater harvesting, including open water reservoir options.
Water Tanks by Geometry
Modular water tanks are also classified by shape: rectangular (prismatic) tanks provide high volume in limited space, cylindrical tanks are preferred in high-capacity projects, and linear tanks are designed to suit narrow and long areas.
Water Tanks by Material
Material selection is one of the factors that most affects the life of a water tank and the quality of the water:
- Galvanized steel: Economical and durable, common in fire water and industrial storage.
- Stainless steel (AISI 304 / AISI 316): High corrosion resistance and a cleanable surface; for potable and utility water and projects with high hygiene expectations.
- Coated panels: Produced with special coating options according to the properties of the liquid to be stored.
What Is a Modular Water Tank?
A modular water tank is a storage system formed by joining factory-prepared panels on site with bolted connections and a gasket system. Thanks to this structure, tank parts can be easily transported to narrow spaces, assembled without welding, and expanded when capacity needs change.
Questions to Ask When Choosing a Water Tank
- For what purpose will the stored water be used (potable and utility, fire, irrigation, process)?
- What are the daily consumption and the targeted reserve duration?
- Which geometry (rectangular, cylindrical, linear) suits the size and shape of the installation area?
- Which material do the water quality and hygiene expectations require?
How Do You Choose the Right Water Tank?
The right choice is made by evaluating together the nature of the water to be stored, the purpose of use, the required capacity and the site conditions. Kolleksan designs modular water tanks from 2 tons up to the required capacity, with project-specific material and geometry options. For details you can review our products page, and for the difference between the concepts see our water tank guide.
For the material options of rectangular tanks, see our rectangular modular water tanks page, as well as our galvanized, special coated, GRP and stainless rectangular water tank pages.
