Two different solutions are often confused when it comes to meeting water needs: the water tanker and the water tank. Although both relate to water, they are in fact two completely different engineering solutions. In this article we explain the key differences between the two concepts, when each is preferred and which product group Kolleksan belongs to.
What Is a Water Tank?
A water tank is a system that stores water at a fixed location inside a permanent structure. It is installed to create a water reserve of a given capacity in a residence, facility, agricultural operation or infrastructure project, and it usually serves in the same place for many years. Modular water tanks are produced in galvanized steel, stainless steel or suitable coating options, and are formed by joining factory-prepared panels on site with bolted connections.
What Is a Water Tanker?
A water tanker (colloquially known in Turkish as “arazöz”) is a mobile tank mounted on a truck or similar vehicle for the purpose of transporting water from one point to another. It is used to deliver water to areas the city network does not reach, to meet temporary water needs at construction sites, or to supply water in emergencies. Water tankers are produced in different volume options, and once a job is done they continue transporting water to another point.
Key Differences Between a Water Tanker and a Water Tank
- Purpose: A water tank is designed to store water, while a water tanker is designed to transport it.
- Location: A water tank is installed at a fixed point and stays there; a water tanker is on a vehicle and is therefore constantly on the move.
- Service life: A water tank is generally designed to serve in the same place for years; a water tanker is used for one-off or repeated transport tasks.
- Capacity logic: The capacity of a water tank is determined by daily consumption and reserve duration; the capacity of a water tanker is determined by the technical limits of the carrying vehicle.
Which Is Preferred in Which Situation?
If a building, facility or agricultural land has a permanent water need (such as potable and utility water, fire water, irrigation water or process water), the right solution is a modular water tank. A water tanker, on the other hand, is generally a complementary vehicle used to fill these tanks: water is carried from the network or a source by tanker, transferred to the fixed tank on site and kept safely there until it is needed. In other words, in most projects the water tanker and the water tank are not alternatives to each other but two different elements that complement each other.
Typical Capacities of Water Tankers
Water tankers are produced in different volume options, generally between 8,000 and 18,000 liters, depending on the truck chassis they are mounted on. The interior of these vehicles is designed with compartments to limit the movement of water during transport. In water tanks, by contrast, capacity is not tied to a vehicle limit in this way; thanks to the modular structure it can be set project by project over a wide range from 2 tons to 20,000 tons.
Why Are the Two Concepts Often Confused?
In everyday speech “water depot” and “water tank” are often used interchangeably, which sometimes leads to confusion with “water tanker”. In engineering, however, the word “tank” is a general term for vessels that store liquids; the tank that stores water at a fixed point is a water tank, and the vehicle that transports water is a water tanker. For all of these concepts, see our water tank guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a water tanker be used instead of a water tank?
A water tanker can be a temporary solution for short-term or emergency needs, but for a permanent and reliable water reserve a modular water tank is a more suitable engineering solution.
Can water transported by a water tanker be stored in a water tank?
Yes. Water carried by tanker from remote points can be collected in a fixed modular tank on site and kept safely until it is needed; this is a complementary method applied in many projects.
Which Solution Does Kolleksan Offer?
Kolleksan’s product group is fixed modular water tanks assembled on site. Vehicle-mounted water tanker production is outside this group. For a wide range of uses, from industrial facilities to residential projects and from agricultural operations to fire water systems, we design, manufacture and install on site modular water tanks in galvanized steel, stainless steel (AISI 304 / AISI 316) and suitable coating options, from 2 tons up to the required capacity.
