One of the questions asked most often in a water tank project is “how many tons of tank are needed?” The right capacity is determined by daily water consumption, the duration of water to be held in reserve and the purpose of the tank. In this article we explain which criteria capacity calculation is based on.
Key Criteria That Determine Capacity
- Daily water consumption: Varies by type of building (residence, facility, agricultural operation) and the number of people or the production capacity within it.
- Reserve duration: How many hours/days of water need are targeted to be met in the event of a water cut.
- Purpose of use: The calculation differs depending on whether it is potable and utility water, fire water, process water or irrigation water.
- Site conditions: The size and shape of the area where the tank will be installed affect the geometry to be preferred (rectangular, cylindrical).
Capacity in Domestic Projects
In residential, apartment and housing complex projects, capacity is determined project by project according to the type of building, daily water consumption and the targeted reserve duration. In housing complexes and mass housing, modular systems whose capacity can be increased as needs change may be preferred.
Capacity in Industrial and Fire Water Projects
In industrial facilities the calculation is based on production and process water needs, and in fire suppression systems on the suppression duration and flow rate required by the relevant standard (for example NFPA 22). For this reason, capacity calculation for fire water tanks requires a different engineering process than for a general utility water tank.
Capacity in Agricultural Projects
In agricultural water tanks, capacity is determined by the size of the area to be irrigated, seasonal water needs and the reserve duration desired against drought and water-cut risks. Kolleksan agricultural water tanks are designed in different capacities from 2 tons to 20,000 tons.
Why Can’t Capacity Be Calculated with a Single Formula?
Even when two projects have the same building type, the number of people, water usage habits, reserve targets and site conditions may differ. For this reason, a reliable capacity calculation requires evaluating project-specific data together with the engineering team rather than looking at a general table.
Let’s Determine the Right Capacity Together
Thanks to the modular structure, capacity can be flexibly designed from 2 tons up to the required size according to the needs of the project. The Kolleksan engineering team evaluates your site data and determines the most suitable capacity for you.
