What Is the Difference Between AISI 304 and AISI 316 Stainless Steel?

When it comes to material selection in stainless water tanks, two basic steel grades come to mind: AISI 304 and AISI 316. Both offer high corrosion resistance, but the difference between them matters for taking the project forward with the right material.

What Is AISI 304?

AISI 304 is the most commonly preferred stainless steel grade for general-purpose use. It offers a standard solution for potable and utility water storage and for general water storage projects. Its hygienic, cleanable surface supports the safe storage of water.

What Is AISI 316?

Compared with AISI 304, AISI 316 contains molybdenum in its composition. This additional alloying element generally makes the material more resistant to the effects of chloride. For this reason, AISI 316 is preferred in projects involving water with a high chloride content or more aggressive environmental conditions.

Which Should Be Chosen in Which Situation?

The right grade is determined according to the content of the water to be stored, the purpose of use and the site conditions:

  • For standard potable and utility water and general storage projects, AISI 304 is generally sufficient.
  • When water with a high chloride content, coastal regions or more aggressive environmental conditions are involved, AISI 316 is considered.

Common Areas of Use

AISI 304 is widely preferred in the potable and utility water tanks of residences, hotels, commercial buildings and general industrial facilities. AISI 316, on the other hand, stands out in facilities in coastal regions and in projects requiring more aggressive environmental conditions or high hygiene standards, such as the food and pharmaceutical sectors.
